Getting the perfect shot
If you are targeting the glossy recipe magazines then the layout of your food can’t be stressed enough. Tidy up before you cook and prepare your table setting and lighting, so that once the food is cooked, you’re ready to shoot.
A food photographer I once knew, always said you need to be prepared to let the food get cold while you get the perfect shot. You may need to set up artificial lighting with three or four lamps, or to take time with the table arrangements.
Other people working in the industry, seem to be able to get their lighting set up in advance, then quickly shoot and eat. You can experiment to find out what works for you.
For my gardening photography I take hundreds of photographs, including gardener action shots, and close ups of flowers, insects and vegetables. You may also find you have to pose for shots or buy vegetables from the supermarket when the produce you’re writing about has failed to grow on your own plot, or is out of season. I recently had to set up a scene for a photo shoot that looked like I’d just grown a load of vegetables in March. Many of the vegetables that made it into the final photo shoot, had just been imported to our local supermarket from Spain!
One editor, after clarifying his instructions on how a gardening article should take shape, added: “Also a selection of good pics. One of you with a spade digging in the garden, or outdoors holding a selection of veg in your arms/a trug/a veg box and looking into the camera. That would be brilliant too. Produce can be shop-bought of course, but mustn’t look like it!”
So as a freelance writer in this market, you need to be a jack of all trades – artist, food stylist, photographer, interviewer, horticulturalist, garden pest controller, health practitioner (or know someone who is), fitness guru and cook!
